His professional speaking career includes workshops and keynote presentations to over 1 million people at local, state, national and international conferences and events including the National School Boards Association, California School Boards Association, American Association of School Administrators, California School Leadership Association and numerous board, administration, student, certificated and classified presentations.
Jim has had the privilege of sharing the speaking platform with Former National League Baseball pitcher Dave Dravecky, 3-time Olympic gold medal winner Gail Devers and internationally recognized speaker and author, Dr. Denis Waitley. His radio and television appearances include an education interview with Roger Hedgecock, frequent "substitute teacher" for the nationally syndicated Rush Limbaugh show.

Jim has served six terms on the Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees. The Sweetwater District is the largest secondary school district in the nation serving 80,000 students and 4,500 employees in our middle schools, high schools and adult schools with an annual budget of $350 million dollars.
During his service as a school board member, Jim Cartmill has worked to increase academic standards, developed a community service program, balanced over $1 billion dollars in budgets and established educational partnerships in China, Europe and Mexico. In addition, he currently serves as a statewide delegate for the California School Board Association. Other initiatives include:
Prior to his election, Jim Cartmill coached the Bonita Vista girls’ tennis team—a group that included all-American and nationally ranked players—to an undefeated 87-0 league record. He also was the "mental/motivation coach" for Rhoni Barton, 1997 National Overall Water Ski Champion.
He and his wife Cindy are both Sweetwater District graduates, and he is a graduate of San Diego State University. He has a daughter, Blythe Marie, who is a Junior at a Sweetwater Union High School District school and a stepson Jason, who served three tours of duty in Iraq, Kuwait, and Kosovo as a field medic in the Army during the war.
